Eyewitness account notes contribution of rumble strips to the crash, though erroneously blames the cyclist rather than the rumble strips. See comments at the SMN story: http://bit.ly/db4zvQ

Do you know when those rumble strips were installed? There are big problems with GDOT's policies on rumble strips. Namely, the stated policy conforms with USDOT's specifications, namely that a road "used by cyclists" should have 4 feet to the right of the rumble strips.

This stretch is on a state designated bike route, looks recently paved and has rumble strips with only 2 feet to the right: huge problem. GDOT traffic engineers apparently don't think cyclists should be on that road - they want us to stay in our neighborhoods and never go anywhere.

The good news, if it ever trickles down to the state level, is that USDOT is supporting a national trails network as championed by the Adventure Cycling Association: http://ht.ly/1DB9O

My 7-year old and I rode a road bike - trailer bike combo, and did the 30 miler. Great ride, beautiful sites (cotton fields, old rustic architecture, ponds and open fields) and very well-mapped out. No complaints, a great turnout, safe, and well worth the effort! I plan to do the 60 miler in 2010. Everyone I saw and met was friendly, and breathing hard (for some reason). Must have been the altitude.

Anyone in Richmond Hill interested in doing Cruisinf in the Country. I hear the Savannah Century was a bust and may not be back much like the Tybee Marathon. Cruisin in the Country is suppose to be a nice event with a great setting for riding.
