Cyclist struck by truck on Highway 17
I heard about an accident yesterday at the local coffee shop involving a cyclist but no details. I didn’t think anyone I knew would be out mid-morning but hated to hear about this. Seems to be someone passing through though, here are the details from Savannah Morning News;
RICHMOND HILL – A bicyclist, riding north on US 17 just south of Richmond Hill, was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck a few minutes before 1 p.m. today.
The cyclist, described by a Bryan County Sheriff Deputy as a middle aged male from Virginia, was transported to Memorial University Medical Center by ambulance for treatment.
While the extent of the man’s injuries is unknown, an official on the scene said he was conscious prior to be taken to Memorial.
The speed limit on the section of highway where the accident occurred is 55 MPH.
The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.
Sounds like he’s ok but very little info so far.

February Riding in Coastal Georgia
I decided last month to stop making excuses and just ride the bike, then it got colder than what I have clothes to ride in, so I had one last excuse to overcome. Now it’s been in the 70’s and I’m back on the bike getting a few miles in during weekday afternoons and mid days on weekends. Check the wind direction and you’ll usually find me easily. South or east I ride 144 to the end at Fancy Hall. West winds I ride out Belfast Keller to Daniel Siding to Hwy 17. On rare occasions of a north wind I’ll ride to Ft McAllister but I don’t like to do that on week nights during rush hour traffic. But doing these rides I’m always riding into the wind for the first half and running downwind on the way home. Since it’s been so nice and not wet I’ll be on a black/yellow Giant. Come ride with me.
Bicycle Friendly Community Workshop
A Bicycle Friendly Community Workshop will be held Wed, Jan 21 from 9am-1pm at the Coastal Georgia Center, 305 MLK Blvd. The workshop will be facilitated by Preston Tyree of the Washington, DC based League of American Bicyclists. Come by bike or bring one along, as there will likely be an on-bike component to the day’s events.
The LAB administers the Bicycle Friendly Communities Program, and the City of Savannah has completed the first of its two-part application. The four hour workshop will review facilities and programs in Savannah for their bicycle friendliness, and include a review of the Bikability Checklist.
Whether or not we as a community rise to the national definition of Bicycle Friendly Community (in Georgia, only Roswell has achieved this status), we are sure to learn about how to get better and closer to that goal.
We as bicyclists often face adverse conditions — this workshop represents a chance to look at those and discuss how we can make things better locally rather than complaining into the abyss — we are strongest when we speak together! Please consider joining us and Savannah city officials on Wednesday, January 21.
Safe riding, give us three feet please!
Richmond Hill, or actually the roads south of Richmond Hill where most of us ride, are fairly safe with not a ton of traffic. I definitely feel more comfortable here than if I were riding in most of Chatham county around Savannah. But I found a new website/product today that is actually a neat idea, 3feetplease.com. They sell a jersey that is in safety yellow that I would have loved to have been wearing on more than one occasion riding up highway 144, especially on early morning or late evening rides when there isn’t a lot of bright light. Georgia does not currently have a 3 ft law though many other states do.
New Richmond Hill Cycling website
This is the new Richmond Hill Cycling website. It should be easier to maintain for me and get information to everyone easier.
