Cyclist struck by truck on Highway 17

I heard about an accident yesterday at the local coffee shop involving a cyclist but no details. I didn’t think anyone I knew would be out mid-morning but hated to hear about this. Seems to be someone passing through though, here are the details from Savannah Morning News;

RICHMOND HILL – A bicyclist, riding north on US 17 just south of Richmond Hill, was struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck a few minutes before 1 p.m. today.

The cyclist, described by a Bryan County Sheriff Deputy as a middle aged male from Virginia, was transported to Memorial University Medical Center by ambulance for treatment.

While the extent of the man’s injuries is unknown, an official on the scene said he was conscious prior to be taken to Memorial.

The speed limit on the section of highway where the accident occurred is 55 MPH.

The accident is being investigated by the Georgia State Patrol.

Sounds like he’s ok but very little info so far.

    Do you know when those rumble strips were installed? There are big problems with GDOT’s policies on rumble strips. Namely, the stated policy conforms with USDOT’s specifications, namely that a road “used by cyclists” should have 4 feet to the right of the rumble strips.

    This stretch is on a state designated bike route, looks recently paved and has rumble strips with only 2 feet to the right: huge problem. GDOT traffic engineers apparently don’t think cyclists should be on that road – they want us to stay in our neighborhoods and never go anywhere.

    The good news, if it ever trickles down to the state level, is that USDOT is supporting a national trails network as championed by the Adventure Cycling Association: http://ht.ly/1DB9O

    Eyewitness account notes contribution of rumble strips to the crash, though erroneously blames the cyclist rather than the rumble strips. See comments at the SMN story: http://bit.ly/db4zvQ
